The role

Summary

Sr. Staff Engineer (Backend) at Hims & Hers, a leading digital health platform, leads architectural innovation and strategic technical direction for customer-facing systems at organizational scale. This role requires 12+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated group-level technical leadership, expertise in scalable backend technologies (Kotlin, Java, Go), and a proven track record of designing systems that balance short-term delivery with long-term sustainability while advancing the company's mission to make healthcare more accessible and affordable.

What you'll do

Define Architectural Vision & Strategic Direction: Establish and evolve the long-term architectural vision for customer-facing backend systems aligned with business strategy. Lead cross-organizational technical initiatives that address scalability requirements, system boundaries, foundational capabilities, and technology selection to support Hims & Hers' mission of accessible healthcare delivery.
Establish Technical Governance & Quality Standards: Create and codify architectural patterns, design frameworks, and coding standards that ensure quality, reliability, and operational excellence across engineering organizations. Serve as the technical authority on design decisions, conduct architectural reviews, and foster alignment on best practices across teams.
Drive Organization-Wide Enablement: Collaborate with engineering leadership, product teams, and business stakeholders to shape product direction while ensuring architecture supports strategic goals. Drive organization-wide adoption of scalable practices, modern tooling, development norms, and infrastructure capabilities that increase team velocity and system reliability.
Mentor Senior Technical Leaders: Actively mentor engineering leaders, staff engineers, and senior engineers to elevate technical capabilities across the organization. Champion initiatives that foster talent density, engineering rigor, technical excellence, and a culture of continuous learning, feedback, and professional growth.
Navigate Ambiguity & Accelerate Execution: Lead strategic initiatives through complexity and organizational ambiguity by clarifying technical direction where ownership is unclear. Remove cross-team blockers, simplify decision-making processes, and accelerate delivery of critical initiatives that advance company objectives.
Translate Customer Needs into Technical Solutions: Work closely with product and clinical teams to understand customer needs and healthcare requirements. Define architectural principles and design patterns that embed customer obsession and clinical safety into the platform's architecture and operations.
Design for Sustainability & Scalability: Lead design of systems and team structures that support sustainable growth as Hims & Hers scales. Prioritize investment in non-functional requirements including observability, system reliability, database performance, infrastructure migrations, and developer experience alongside feature delivery.
Lead Infrastructure & Platform Initiatives: Introduce, scale, and maintain shared infrastructure, frameworks, libraries, and internal tools that empower teams to build faster and more reliably. Measure and communicate impact of platform investments on team velocity, system reliability, and engineering satisfaction.
