Role

What you'll do.

Senior Platform Engineer role at Hims & Hers, a public telehealth company, focused on building AI-native developer platforms and infrastructure tooling. You'll design and operate the developer platform powering services, with emphasis on AI-enriched service catalogs, agent-ready deployment golden paths, Istio service mesh standardization, and platform guardrails. This role requires 5+ years of platform/SRE experience, production Backstage knowledge, cloud-native infrastructure expertise, and hands-on coding proficiency to drive adoption across product teams.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and extend Backstage-based service provisioning: Keep Backstage service templating foundations healthy for greenfield deployments. Contribute to the service catalog layer with YAML-backed, AI-enriched registry exposed via REST API and MCP protocols, designed for queryability by both engineers and agentic systems. Ensure templates support rapid service onboarding while maintaining consistency across the platform.
  • Build and scale agent golden paths: Evolve agentic infrastructure from experimental phases to production-ready standard architecture. Treat AI agents as first-class platform users by defining deployment standards, establishing safety guardrails, and enabling product teams to ship AI agents consistently. Create documentation, runbooks, and best practices that lower deployment friction.
  • Drive Istio service mesh adoption and standardization: Lead rollout and standardization of Istio across the service fleet, covering mTLS encryption, intelligent traffic shaping, and policy enforcement. Build golden paths, migration playbooks, and comprehensive runbooks that make mesh adoption straightforward for product teams. Own communication and education strategy to drive organizational adoption.
  • Establish platform guardrails and compliance policies: Design and implement scorecards, insights dashboards, and CI policies including linting, contract validation, and security baseline enforcement. Create clear signals and automated remediation to help teams reach green status. Implement policy-as-code frameworks for AI-generated code review and automated remediation pipelines.
  • Design and operate core platform infrastructure: Own design, implementation, and operation of Kubernetes clusters, Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks (Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, service templates, runtime addons, and shared libraries. Define Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for each component and maintain detailed runbooks for incident response and troubleshooting.
  • Partner with product teams on platform adoption: Collaborate with rotating product squads to co-design golden paths, collect user feedback, identify and remove friction points, and measure platform adoption metrics. Use developer feedback loops to inform platform roadmap decisions and ensure tooling solves real workflow problems.
  • Lead migrations and deprecation initiatives: Plan and execute complex multi-repository changes including API versioning, SDK upgrades, framework migrations, and runtime updates. Develop clear communication strategies, comprehensive documentation, phased rollout approaches, and rollback procedures to minimize disruption while maintaining safety.
  • Instrument and measure developer platform metrics: Own observability for platform reliability and developer experience. Instrument delivery metrics including build times, deployment frequency, and deployment success rates. Use data-driven insights to prioritize platform roadmap decisions and demonstrate ROI of platform investments to leadership.

About the Role:

We're looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to build the paved road for product teams and drive adoption at scale. You'll design and operate the developer platform that powers our services, with a particular focus on building AI-native platform tooling: from agentic service catalogs and MCP-backed APIs to golden paths for AI agent deployment. We use Backstage for service provisioning and templating, but our platform investment is moving toward AI-first tooling that serves both engineers and agentic systems as first-class users.

You Will:

  • Maintain and extend service provisioning foundations: Keep Backstage-based service templating healthy for greenfield use cases. Contribute to our growing service catalog layer: a YAML-backed, AI-enriched registry exposed via REST API and MCP, designed to be queryable by both engineers and agentic systems

  • Build and scale agent golden paths: Evolve our agentic infrastructure from experiments to standard architecture. Treat AI agents as first-class platform users: defining deployment standards, and building the guardrails that let teams ship agents safely and consistently

  • Drive service mesh adoption: Lead the rollout and standardization of Istio across the fleet: covering mTLS, traffic shaping, and policy enforcement and build the golden paths and runbooks that make mesh adoption straightforward for product teams

  • Establish platform guardrails: Define scorecards/insights and CI policies (lint, contract checks, security baselines) that raise signals and make it easy for teams to get to “green”

  • Own core platform components: Design, build, and operate Kubernetes, IaC (e.g., Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, service templates, runtime addons, and shared libraries with SLOs and clear runbooks

  • Work closely with product teams: Partner with a rotating set of squads to co‑design golden paths, collect feedback, remove friction, and measure adoption and impact

  • Lead migrations and deprecations: Plan and execute multi‑repo changes (API versioning, SDK upgrades, framework/runtime bumps) with clear comms, docs, and safe rollout strategies

  • Measure what matters: Instrument developer experience and delivery metrics; use data to prioritize and iterate the platform roadmap

You Have:

  • 5+ years as a DevOps, SRE, Software, or Platform Engineer building and operating services and the tooling around them

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; or equivalent years of experience

  • Production experience with Backstage (or a similar developer portal), service catalogs, and software templates

  • Depth in cloud + containers (e.g., AWS, Kubernetes, Istio), infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform or similar), and CI/CD

  • Proficient coding skills in at least one of TypeScript/JavaScript, Go, Java, or Python and familiarity with multi‑repo change management

  • A product mindset with empathy for developers; you seek feedback, simplify workflows, and bias toward adoption

  • Experience enabling AI-assisted software delivery at scale, building agent-ready platform workflows, policy-as-code guardrails, and automated review/remediation pipelines for AI-generated code (especially infrastructure as code)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record making platforms that developers choose to use self‑service workflows, templates, and documentation that accelerate delivery

  • Experience leading large-scale dependency and framework upgrades across many repos/services (e.g., automated PRs, codemods, or templated migrations), with safe rollout and measurable adoption

  • Hands‑on with observability (Datadog Preferred but Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry will all work)

  • Security-first mindset and experience with secrets management, IAM/least privilege, container scanning, etc

  • Comfortable with RFCs, technical writing, and leading cross‑org programs

Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):

  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles

  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days

  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave

  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)

  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution

  • Offsite team retreats
