Role
What you'll do.
Join Ramp's Money Platform International team to build foundational payment infrastructure that powers global expansion across 70,000+ companies managing $200B in annualized spend. As a backend engineer, you'll design multi-currency accounting systems, integrate international banking rails (SEPA, BACS, SWIFT), and navigate complex cross-border compliance requirements while balancing 0-to-1 market launches with scaling existing platforms. This role requires 5+ years of production backend engineering experience with strong systems design skills in high-ambiguity, fast-moving environments where end-to-end ownership is paramount.
Responsibilities
- International Payment Infrastructure Development: Design, build, and deploy payment infrastructure capable of operating seamlessly across multiple countries, currencies, and regulatory regimes. This involves architecting systems that handle payment authorization, settlement, and reconciliation across diverse global markets while maintaining data consistency and compliance standards.
- Multi-Currency Accounting & Reconciliation Systems: Engineer scalable multi-currency accounting platforms and automated reconciliation systems that can handle cross-border transactions at scale. You'll work with financial ledgers, FX conversion logic, and complex accounting workflows that ensure accurate financial reporting across international operations.
- International Banking Integration: Integrate Ramp's platform with international banking systems and payment rails including SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area), BACS (UK payments), and SWIFT (global settlement). You'll manage third-party banking partner relationships, handle API integrations, and ensure reliable connectivity to regional payment networks.
- 0-to-1 Market Launch & 1-N Scaling: Own the complete lifecycle of international market expansion—from greenfield platform development launching new markets to maturing and scaling existing systems simultaneously. Balance architectural decisions that enable rapid market entry with long-term scalability requirements as transaction volumes grow.
- Cross-Functional Compliance & Regulatory Collaboration: Partner with compliance, product, operations, and external banking partners to navigate complex regional regulatory requirements across different jurisdictions. Translate regulatory constraints into technical architecture, ensuring systems meet local financial regulations, data residency requirements, and audit standards.
- End-to-End Problem Ownership: Take full ownership of problems from initial architecture design through production reliability and ongoing partner integrations. Drive decisions on technology selection, infrastructure design, deployment strategies, and post-launch support with minimal guidance in a high-autonomy environment.
- Production Reliability & Performance Optimization: Ensure distributed systems operate reliably at scale with minimal downtime. Optimize for performance across geographically distributed infrastructure, manage database query efficiency, implement proper caching strategies, and establish monitoring/alerting to catch issues before they impact customers.
Qualifications
What we look for.

Proven ability to design scalable backend systems that handle high-transaction volumes with strong fundamentals in distributed systems architecture, database design, and API design patterns. Must be comfortable translating ambiguous, complex requirements into reliable, maintainable technical solutions.
Production Engineering at Scale
Demonstrated experience building and maintaining production systems in high-scale environments (millions of transactions, terabytes of data, or complex infrastructure). Strong understanding of performance optimization, database indexing strategies, caching layers, and system monitoring/observability.
Distributed Systems & Concurrency
Solid grasp of distributed computing principles including consistency models, eventual consistency patterns, consensus algorithms, and handling failure scenarios. Experience with eventual consistency models, database replication, and systems resilience at scale.

Understanding of financial accounting concepts including multi-currency ledgers, reconciliation workflows, settlement processes, and transaction integrity requirements. Familiarity with how money moves through financial systems and the criticality of data accuracy.
API Integration & Third-Party Partnerships
Experience integrating with external APIs and third-party systems, managing API versioning, handling rate limiting, and building resilient connections to systems outside your direct control. Understanding of payment gateway integrations and banking partner APIs is valuable.
Education
Computer Science or Related Field
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience demonstrating mastery of data structures, algorithms, and system design fundamentals. Ramp values demonstrated capability over specific credentials.
Experience
5+ Years Backend/Platform Engineering
Minimum 5 years of professional backend or platform engineering experience in production environments serving significant transaction volumes or user bases. Your track record should demonstrate scaling systems, making architecture decisions that stood the test of time, and shipping features that directly impacted revenue or efficiency.
High-Ambiguity & Fast-Paced Environments
Proven ability to thrive in fast-moving startups or high-velocity teams where requirements are ambiguous, priorities shift, and you must operate with incomplete information. Comfort with shipping incrementally, making decisions with 80% information, and course-correcting based on learning.
Independent Problem Ownership
Track record of owning complete problem domains end-to-end with minimal management oversight. Should have examples where you identified technical requirements, made architectural decisions, coordinated with other teams, and delivered production systems with high ownership mentality.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Experience working effectively across engineering teams, product, operations, compliance, and external partners. Comfortable translating business and regulatory requirements into technical constraints, and advocating for engineering considerations in business decisions.
Skills
Required
Distributed Systems Architecture
Deep experience designing and building systems that operate across multiple servers, data centers, or geographic regions. Comfortable reasoning about consistency guarantees, failure modes, and trade-offs between availability and consistency.
Backend Programming Languages
Proficiency in one or more backend languages (Python, Go, Java, TypeScript/Node.js, C++, or similar) with ability to write clean, maintainable, production-grade code at scale.
Database Design & SQL
Strong SQL skills with deep understanding of relational database design, indexing strategies, query optimization, and transaction semantics. Experience with both schema design and operational database management.
API Design & Development
Experience designing and building RESTful or gRPC APIs that serve multiple clients, with understanding of versioning strategies, backward compatibility, error handling, and rate limiting.
Systems Thinking
Ability to think holistically about system interactions, identify bottlenecks, optimize for throughput and latency, and reason about operational concerns including monitoring, logging, and alerting.
Preferred
Fintech or Payments Experience
Nice to havePrior experience building payment systems, financial platforms, or working in fintech companies. Familiarity with payment processing pipelines, fraud detection, settlement workflows, or regulatory requirements in financial services.

About Ramp
Ramp is building the smart infrastructure for finance teams, embedded in the transaction flow of every dollar a business spends. We automate how over $200B in annualized spend flows in and out of 70,000+ companies: authorizing payments, flagging risk, categorizing spend, and closing books.
The problems are high-stakes, data-dense, and unforgiving.
We hire people with high agency and high urgency. We look for slope over intercept. We care less about where you trained and more about what you’ve built. At Ramp, everyone is a builder who owns problems end to end and makes consequential decisions that shape the outcome.
The median Ramp customer saves 5% and grows revenue 16% in their first year – far in excess of businesses operating without Ramp. We believe every ambitious company deserves the same.
If you want to build systems that directly shape how companies move and manage billions, Ramp is the place to do it.
About the Role

We work at the intersection of greenfield and scale: launching new markets from 0 to 1 while maturing the systems that already run.
