The role

Summary

Airwallex is seeking an Engineering Lead for their Issuing Platform team in Singapore to lead engineers building mission-critical card issuing, transaction processing, and settlement systems at global scale. This role combines people leadership with technical direction, requiring 8+ years of software engineering experience with 1+ years managing engineers directly, and expertise in modern backend development using Java/Kotlin/Go/Python with distributed systems experience.

What you'll do

Team Management: Manage, coach, and grow a team of engineers through regular feedback, performance management, and career development
Technical Leadership: Provide technical direction and architectural guidance for high-impact transaction processing systems
Engineering Culture: Build a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, quality, and continuous improvement
System Architecture: Partner with senior engineers to design scalable, resilient solutions for card issuing platforms
Platform Evolution: Guide the evolution of application and platform infrastructure to reduce operational overhead
Quality Standards: Ensure high standards for system design, code quality, testing, and operational excellence
Strategic Collaboration: Work closely with product, operations, and other engineering leaders to align execution with business priorities
Technology Evaluation: Evaluate new technologies and patterns, making pragmatic decisions balancing innovation with stability
Hiring and Onboarding: Support hiring and onboarding processes to scale the team sustainably
Infrastructure Improvement: Drive improvements across reliability, observability, security, and cost efficiency

What we look for

Technical

Backend DevelopmentStrong background in modern backend development using Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python
Distributed SystemsProven experience designing and delivering large-scale, distributed, production systems
Event-driven ArchitectureHands-on experience with event-driven and streaming architectures, particularly Kafka
RESTful APIsExperience designing and operating RESTful APIs at scale
Cloud PlatformsCloud experience with GCP (preferred) or AWS, including containerized workloads
Container TechnologiesExperience with Docker and Kubernetes for containerized deployments
Observability ToolsFamiliarity with Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus for monitoring and operations

Education

Bachelor's DegreeBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field

Software Engineering Experience8+ years of professional software engineering experience
People LeadershipAt least 1+ years in a people leadership role managing engineers directly
Technical LeadershipDemonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead execution of technical strategy
