The role

Summary

Engineering Manager role leading the Issuing Platform team at Airwallex, responsible for building mission-critical card issuing, transaction processing, and settlement systems at global scale. The role combines people leadership with technical architecture oversight, requiring 10+ years of engineering experience with 2+ years in management.

What you'll do

People Leadership: Manage, coach, and grow a team of engineers through regular feedback, performance management, and career development

Technical Architecture: Provide technical direction and architectural guidance for high-impact transaction processing systems

Engineering Culture: Build a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, quality, and continuous improvement

Platform Evolution: Guide the evolution of application and platform infrastructure to reduce operational overhead and improve developer productivity

Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, operations, and other engineering leaders to align execution with business priorities

System Design Leadership: Partner with senior engineers and staff engineers to design scalable, resilient solutions

Quality Standards: Ensure high standards for system design, code quality, testing, and operational excellence

Team Scaling: Support hiring and onboarding to scale the team sustainably

Infrastructure Optimization: Drive improvements across reliability, observability, security, and cost efficiency

Technology Evaluation: Evaluate new technologies and patterns, and make pragmatic decisions that balance innovation with stability

Backend DevelopmentStrong background in modern backend development using Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python

Distributed SystemsProven experience designing and delivering large-scale, distributed, production systems

Computer Science FundamentalsSolid understanding of computer science fundamentals and object-oriented design principles

Event-driven ArchitectureHands-on experience with event-driven and streaming architectures, particularly Kafka

API DesignExperience designing and operating RESTful APIs at scale

Cloud PlatformsCloud experience with GCP (preferred) or AWS, including containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes

Observability ToolsFamiliarity with observability and operational tooling such as Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus

Education

Bachelor's DegreeBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field

Software Engineering Experience10+ years of professional software engineering experience

Management ExperienceAt least 2+ years in a people leadership role managing engineers directly

Mentoring ExperienceDemonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead the execution of technical and delivery strategy

Fintech Experience (Preferred)Experience in fintech, payments, or other regulated financial domains

JVM Ecosystem (Preferred)Deep experience with JVM-based ecosystems, including Java or Kotlin with Spring or Spring Boot

High-Availability Systems (Preferred)Prior experience leading teams responsible for high-availability, low-latency systems
