The role

Summary

Senior/Staff-level Software Engineer role on Airwallex's Citizen Developers Infrastructure team, responsible for designing and operating the internal platform that empowers non-technical teams to build and run workflows and automations safely. You'll bridge application code and infrastructure, building developer tooling, establishing security guardrails, and maintaining Temporal-based workflow infrastructure with experience in Kubernetes, GitOps, and platform engineering at scale.

What you'll do

Design and build citizen-developer platform services: Create intuitive, secure platform abstractions and tooling that enable non-product engineering teams (operations, finance, analysts) to safely build and deploy automations and workflows without requiring deep infrastructure knowledge, while embedding security, compliance, and software engineering best practices by default.
Establish secure SDLC and governance guardrails: Implement security controls, compliance frameworks, and development process standards for citizen-developer-built applications to ensure regulatory requirements and organizational policies are automatically enforced, reducing manual oversight and security risks.
Build self-serve operations and development tooling: Develop comprehensive operational dashboards, monitoring solutions, and development utilities that reduce dependencies on central platform engineering teams, enabling application teams to diagnose issues, manage deployments, and iterate independently.
Design and maintain Temporal-based workflow infrastructure: Engineer and operate production Temporal workflow orchestration systems addressing multi-tenancy, high availability, disaster recovery, and cost optimization at scale while ensuring reliable execution of mission-critical business processes.
Contribute to Kubernetes and GitOps foundation: Enhance and maintain the Kubernetes cluster infrastructure, ArgoCD deployment automation, Helm package management, and Terraform infrastructure-as-code tooling that power the platform, ensuring deployments are auditable, repeatable, and safe with proper rollback capabilities.
Participate in on-call rotation and incident response: Engage in code reviews, technical design discussions, and on-call rotations for workflow-related services; lead incident response procedures, post-mortems, and drive long-term architectural fixes that improve system reliability and prevent recurrence.
Document standards and reference architectures: Create comprehensive documentation of platform patterns, best practices, reference architectures, and operational runbooks that serve as self-serve guidance for teams building on top of the platform, accelerating adoption and ensuring consistent implementation.

What we look for

Technical

Backend platform engineering6+ years of professional experience designing, building, and operating production backend and platform services at scale, with proven expertise in architecting systems that serve as foundations for other engineering teams.
Strongly-typed backend languagesStrong hands-on proficiency with at least one statically-typed backend language such as Go, Java, or Rust, with ability to write production-grade code demonstrating deep language knowledge and performance optimization.
Kubernetes and container orchestrationPractical, in-depth experience with Kubernetes cluster management, container deployment patterns, resource management, networking, and troubleshooting in production environments supporting multiple applications and teams.
GitOps and infrastructure automationHands-on expertise with GitOps tools such as ArgoCD for declarative deployments, Terraform for infrastructure-as-code provisioning, Helm for Kubernetes package management, and version control workflows enabling auditable, repeatable infrastructure changes.
Internal platform designProven track record designing and building internal developer platforms or productivity tooling used by multiple cross-functional teams, with focus on intuitive APIs, clear contracts, and developer experience optimization.

Education

Computer Science or related field foundationBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating mastery of computer science fundamentals and software architecture principles.

Experience

Production platform operationsDemonstrated experience operating production systems at scale with focus on reliability, observability, and performance optimization; comfortable with on-call responsibilities and driving incident resolution processes.
Cross-functional collaborationExperience working in highly collaborative, multi-team environments where you translate platform constraints into clear APIs and paved paths for application teams; skilled at managing competing priorities and building consensus.
Workflow orchestration systemsSignificant production experience with Temporal, Cadence, AWS Step Functions, Apache Airflow, or similar workflow orchestration platforms managing complex, stateful, long-running processes at scale is highly valued.
Low-code and citizen developer platformsPrior experience building platforms or tooling specifically designed for non-technical or less-technical users (operations, finance, business analysts) in low-code/no-code or citizen-developer environments is a strong plus.

Skills

Required skills

Go (Golang)Production-grade proficiency in Go for building high-performance backend services, microservices, and cloud-native applications with strong understanding of concurrency patterns, goroutines, and Go's standard library.
Python or Bash scriptingPractical scripting capability using Python or Bash for automation, tooling, infrastructure management, and operational tasks that support platform development and deployment workflows.
Kubernetes administration and developmentHands-on ability to design, deploy, manage, and troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters, including resource definitions (Deployments, StatefulSets, DaemonSets), networking policies, persistent storage, and cluster operations.
ArgoCD and declarative deploymentsExperience implementing GitOps-based continuous deployment using ArgoCD or similar tools, with expertise in managing application deployments through Git-based workflows and achieving consistent, auditable infrastructure state.
Terraform and infrastructure-as-codePractical experience writing and maintaining Terraform modules for infrastructure provisioning, cloud resource management, and infrastructure automation with focus on modularity, reusability, and operational safety.
Platform API design and developer experienceAbility to design clean, well-documented APIs and developer interfaces that balance power with usability, anticipate developer pain points, and create intuitive abstractions that reduce cognitive load for consuming teams.
System design and architectureStrong foundation in distributed systems design, scalability patterns, high availability architectures, database design, and ability to make principled trade-offs between consistency, availability, and partition tolerance.
Security and compliance mindsetPractical understanding of secure software development lifecycle (SDLC), authentication/authorization patterns, encryption, compliance frameworks (SOC2, PCI-DSS), and ability to embed security controls into platform design by default.

Nice to have

Temporal workflow orchestrationProduction experience designing and operating Temporal workflows for complex, long-running business processes, including workflow versioning, deterministic execution, error handling, and multi-tenant considerations.
