Interview process
- 1Application and Initial Screening — Submit your application through Ashby with resume, cover letter, and any portfolio links. Alan emphasizes hiring people not just roles, so applications from candidates who don't meet 100% of requirements are actively encouraged. Initial screening evaluates fullstack development experience and cultural fit with mission.
- 2Technical Screening Conversation — Preliminary discussion with engineering team member covering technical background, experience with production systems, familiarity with Python/Flask and React, and approach to zero-to-one product development. Focus on depth of production engineering experience rather than exhaustive technical quiz.
- 3Technical Assessment or Pair Programming — Either a focused coding assignment relevant to occupational health or medical software challenges, or live pair programming session with engineer to demonstrate problem-solving approach, code quality standards, and communication style during collaborative development.
- 4Product and Cross-Functional Interview — Conversation with product team, designer, or medical domain expert to assess product-minded thinking, understanding of user needs (doctors, nurses, HR, employees), and ability to collaborate cross-functionally. Discuss how you approach building solutions for different stakeholder groups.
- 5Engineering Leadership Conversation — Discussion with engineering lead or manager covering team dynamics, your approach to ownership and shipping, decision-making in ambiguity, learning from mistakes, and how you envision contributing to the team. May include discussion of career growth and learning goals.
- 6Offer and Reference Checks — Upon successful completion of interviews, Alan conducts reference checks and extends offer including compensation details, equity information, and benefits package. Discussion of location preferences and remote work arrangements finalized.
