Summary

Senior Platform Engineer role at Alan, focused on designing and operating the Data Privacy Orchestrator—a critical platform enabling 15+ teams and 1M+ members to manage personal data lifecycle with GDPR compliance. You'll own platform architecture, build developer-friendly abstractions for data retention/deletion/anonymization, influence cross-functional alignment across legal/security/product teams, and establish scalable patterns for safe-by-default data handling across Alan's expanding European infrastructure.

What you'll do

Own and Operate the Data Privacy Orchestrator Platform: Lead the design, development, and production operation of the Data Privacy Orchestrator—the core engine serving 15+ product areas and 1M+ members. Maintain platform reliability through safety mechanisms (preview/dry-run capabilities, comprehensive audit trails), ensure robust operational health with daily deployments, establish alerting strategies via Datadog, and lead on-call incident response to maintain SLA commitments for data governance operations.
Build Scalable Developer Enablement Infrastructure: Create comprehensive documentation, self-serve templates, and intuitive tooling that empower product teams to independently manage their data lifecycle rules without platform team involvement. Design safe-by-default abstractions and libraries that prevent common data handling mistakes at scale, establish patterns for data retention/deletion/anonymization orchestration, and measure success by reducing dependent team engagement.
Drive Cross-Functional Alignment on Data Governance: Coordinate requirements gathering and decision-making across Legal, Security, Data, and Product teams who don't report to you. Resolve complex deletion-ordering trade-offs, align stakeholders on privacy compliance strategies including GDPR obligations, manage authority-facing work for regulatory compliance, and establish clear ownership models where each area remains accountable for its own data rules.
Expand Platform Coverage Across Data Infrastructure: Extend Data Privacy Orchestrator capabilities across multiple data stores (PostgreSQL, AWS/GCP services), integrate third-party systems and partner platforms as Alan expands into new European countries. Design and implement data extraction/transformation pipelines for compliance operations, establish monitoring for data governance metrics, and ensure privacy-by-design is embedded across all data infrastructure touchpoints.
Write Production-Grade Code for Data Privacy Systems: Develop core platform components in Python and TypeScript/React, implement safety mechanisms and rollback capabilities, write comprehensive tests for data handling operations, and personally deploy code to production environments. Maintain high code quality standards, establish patterns for observability in data operations, and contribute to knowledge sharing across the engineering organization on privacy-engineering best practices.

Backend/Platform Engineering at Senior LevelDemonstrated 5-7+ years of production backend or platform engineering experience with proven deep ownership of systems other engineers depend on.
