What you'll do.

Senior Engineering Manager position at Alan, Europe's fastest-growing one-stop health partner, leading a team of 6-15 engineers in Armenia as one of the first employees. Responsibilities

  • Strategic Technical Leadership: Set and communicate a clear technical vision for the engineering department, establishing high expectations and identifying key technical assets and opportunities. Define the roadmap for technical innovation and ensure alignment with product and business objectives while maintaining engineering excellence standards.
  • Team Culture and Engagement: Bring daily energy and motivation to your team of 6-15 engineers by providing clear context, fostering mutual support, and creating a psychologically safe environment. Monitor team well-being, maintain healthy team dynamics, and cultivate a culture of continuous learning and innovation within your autonomous engineering teams.
  • Engineering Excellence and Productivity: Own the engineering efficiency and quality standards of your team by leveraging productivity tools and AI-driven solutions where appropriate. Zoom in and out depending on team needs, challenge mediocrity in code quality and delivery, and eliminate sources of unnecessary distraction or defocus from high-impact work.
  • Talent Management and Development: Build and maintain a high-talent-density team by recruiting exceptional engineering talent, supporting individual career growth and development opportunities, and addressing performance concerns with promptness and care. Create pathways for professional advancement and ensure your team members are equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate daily with product managers, designers, other engineering leads, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and communication. Represent engineering perspectives in product decisions and translate business requirements into technical strategy while managing dependencies and priorities.
  • Operational Execution: Drive disciplined execution of engineering initiatives with focus on high-impact deliverables that compound success over time. Make decisive technical decisions, balance short-term delivery with long-term technical health, and maintain momentum in a fast-paced healthcare technology environment.
  • Regional Expansion Leadership: Lead the establishment and growth of Alan's engineering presence in Armenia as one of the first employees, building foundational team structures, establishing engineering standards, and contributing to the company's global expansion strategy while adapting to local market and talent dynamics.

  • Backend System Architecture

    Deep expertise in designing and implementing scalable backend systems, microservices architecture, and distributed systems relevant to healthcare and SaaS platforms. Understanding of trade-offs between architectural patterns and ability to lead technical decisions on system design.

  • Healthcare Technology Stack

    Familiarity with healthcare-specific technologies, compliance frameworks (HIPAA, GDPR), and regulatory requirements in the digital health space. Experience with health insurance platforms, telemedicine systems, or preventative care technology is a significant advantage.

  • Cloud Infrastructure and DevOps

    Proficiency with modern cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure), containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code practices. Ability to mentor teams on cloud-native development and operational excellence.

  • Software Engineering Best Practices

    Strong command of clean code principles, testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end), code review processes, and version control systems. Ability to establish and enforce engineering standards that ensure maintainability and quality across codebases.

  • Database Design and Optimization

    Expertise in relational and NoSQL database design, query optimization, data consistency patterns, and performance tuning. Experience selecting appropriate database technologies for specific use cases and scaling databases to handle large datasets.

  • Performance and Security

    Knowledge of application performance optimization, security best practices, authentication mechanisms, data encryption, and vulnerability management. Ability to balance performance and security requirements without compromising either in healthcare contexts.

  • Modern Development Tools and Practices

    Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools, monitoring and observability platforms, logging frameworks, and debugging techniques. Familiarity with productivity optimization tools and their effective implementation within engineering teams.

Education

  • Computer Science or Related Field

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent field. Alternatively, equivalent practical experience demonstrating deep technical foundation and systematic problem-solving abilities.

  • Continuous Learning Orientation

    Demonstrated commitment to staying current with engineering best practices, emerging technologies, and leadership methodologies. Engagement with technical communities, conferences, and professional development activities.

Experience

  • Engineering Management Experience

    Minimum 3-5 years of proven experience managing and scaling engineering teams, ideally leading teams of 8-15+ engineers. Demonstrated success in hiring, developing talent, and building high-performing, cohesive teams with measurable outcomes.

  • Hands-on Technical Leadership

    Track record of remaining deeply involved in technical decision-making while managing team responsibilities. Experience balancing individual contributor work with managerial duties, particularly during critical technical initiatives or product launches.

  • Product and Business Acumen

    Demonstrated understanding of product strategy, business metrics, and commercial success. Experience collaborating with product managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical strategy and engineering roadmaps.

  • Scaling and Growth Experience

    Proven experience scaling engineering teams, systems, and processes as organizations grow. Success establishing engineering practices, documentation, and standards that enable team growth without sacrificing quality or velocity.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration

    Strong track record of working effectively with designers, product managers, data scientists, and other engineering leads. Experience building consensus, navigating complex stakeholder dynamics, and influencing without direct authority.

  • Healthcare or Regulated Industry Experience

    Familiarity with healthcare environments, insurance technology, or other heavily regulated industries is highly valuable. Understanding of compliance requirements, data privacy concerns, and the unique challenges of healthcare software development.

As a Senior Engineering Manager at Alan, you'll be responsible for leading one of our engineering departments, comprising 6-15 engineers and organised in autonomous and nimble teams.
