The role

Summary

Ashby is seeking a Design Engineer in Canada who can seamlessly blend exceptional design and engineering skills to build innovative product features for their talent acquisition platform. The ideal candidate will work on complex design challenges, contribute to the design system, and collaborate closely with product teams to create intuitive solutions for over 100,000 weekly active users.

What you'll do

Design System Development: Enhance and expand the company's in-house design system by creating flexible, composable components that enable other engineers to build consistent and beautiful product interfaces
Product Feature Implementation: Design and implement new features across mobile and web platforms, focusing on user experience, visual design, and technical excellence
User-Centric Design: Collaborate directly with customers and internal teams to wireframe, prototype, and iterate on product designs that solve real user problems
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product engineers, designers, and other team members to drive feature development from conception to production

What we look for

Technical

TypeScriptStrong proficiency in TypeScript for both frontend and potential backend development
ReactAdvanced skills in React for building responsive and interactive user interfaces
CSSExcellent understanding of CSS and modern styling techniques

Education

Computer Science/DesignBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Design, or related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience

Experience

Design Engineering2+ years of continuous experience as an Engineer or Designer with proven ability to design and ship code to production

Visual DesignExceptional visual design skills with ability to create aesthetically pleasing and functional interfaces
Technical ImplementationStrong coding skills to transform design concepts into production-ready features

Interview process

    Introduction Call — 30-minute live call with the co-founder, requiring candidates to screen-share work examples
  2. 2
    Technical/Design Screen — Second round consisting of either a 1-hour live technical screen or a 3-hour async design take-home exercise with a 30-minute live review
  3. 3
    Final Interviews — Three in-depth interviews (3 hours total) covering past design system projects, design system specifics, and either a technical screen or design take-home, depending on the previous round
