The role

Summary

Design Engineer at Ashby is a unique hybrid role combining exceptional design and engineering proficiency to build products used by over 100,000 weekly active users. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex design challenges, contribute to scalable design systems, and ship impactful features rapidly while maintaining high visual standards for a market-leading talent acquisition platform.

What you'll do

Design Complex Product Features: Own the design and technical implementation of challenging design problems across Ashby's talent acquisition platform. This includes conceptualizing user experiences, creating wireframes and visual designs, and implementing pixel-perfect interfaces that solve real recruiter workflows.
Expand and Enhance Design System: Contribute to Ashby's design system by building composable, flexible components that enable other product engineers to create beautiful and consistent interfaces. Help document design patterns and maintain design consistency across the platform.
Consult on Design System Work: Partner with Product Engineers to improve their designs, help solve design system implementation challenges, and mentor others on design principles, visual hierarchy, and user-centered design approaches.
Conduct User Research and Testing: Work directly with customers to understand recruiting workflows and pain points. Gather feedback early through in-house user testing with Ashby's own recruiting team and customers, then iterate designs based on real-world usage patterns.
Implement Full-Stack Features: Handle feature implementation from frontend interfaces through backend logic and database queries. Work independently to deliver complete features without requiring extensive coordination with backend teams.
Maintain Design Excellence Standards: Set and continuously raise the bar for visual design quality across the application. Push design boundaries with each new feature or redesign, ensuring Ashby maintains a premium, professional appearance.
Collaborate on Architecture Decisions: Participate in technical and design architecture decisions, contributing perspective on how data models and technical implementations can support better user experiences and design flexibility.
Ship Features Rapidly: Embrace Ashby's fast-shipping culture by making pragmatic decisions, prioritizing shipped solutions over perfection, and validating ideas with real users early rather than in design review cycles.

Interview process

  1. 1
Initial Recruiter Screen — Optional first round (30 minutes) with a recruiter to understand your background, confirm role alignment, and answer initial questions about the position. This may be skipped depending on leadership bandwidth.
  2. 2
Introduction Call with VP Engineering — 30-minute conversation with Abhik, VP of Engineering, focused on your past work and experience. Be prepared to screen-share and discuss specific design and engineering projects. This call establishes your working relationship and evaluates your understanding of the hybrid design-engineering discipline.
  3. 3
Second Round - Technical or Design Evaluation — Choose one path: (1) One-hour live technical screen coding exercise, or (2) Three-hour asynchronous design take-home followed by 30-minute live discussion. This round evaluates technical depth or design thinking depending on your background and strengths.
