The role

Summary

Ashby is seeking a Junior Design Engineer in Canada who can seamlessly blend design and engineering skills to create innovative, user-centric product experiences. The ideal candidate will work on complex design challenges, contribute to the design system, and help improve the UI/UX of Ashby's talent acquisition platform that serves over 100,000 weekly active users.

What you'll do

Design System Development: Enhance and expand the in-house design system by creating flexible, composable components that enable consistent UI across the product
UI/UX Implementation: Redesign and implement user interfaces with a focus on usability, visual design, and user experience for complex product features
Product Feature Development: Take ownership of design and technical implementation of product features, from wireframing to shipping code to production
Collaborative Design Consulting: Work with product engineers to improve design quality, information hierarchy, and overall user experience of product features
Customer-Driven Iteration: Rapidly prototype, ship, and iterate on features based on user feedback and business needs

Frontend DevelopmentProficiency in building responsive and interactive web applications using TypeScript and React
Design ToolsExperience with design tools and ability to create high-fidelity mockups and prototypes
Performance OptimizationUnderstanding of web performance best practices and ability to create efficient, scalable UI components

Education

Relevant DegreeBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field preferred

Experience

Work ExperienceNo more than 2 years of industry experience as a designer or engineer
Project PortfolioDemonstrated projects (personal or professional) with at least a couple of users showcasing visual design skills and technical implementation

Visual DesignExcellent taste and execution in visual design, ability to create polished and intuitive user interfaces
TypeScriptProficiency in TypeScript for frontend and potentially backend development
ReactStrong skills in React for building interactive and responsive web applications

    Leadership Interview — 30-minute live interview with a company leader to discuss past work, prepared to screen-share examples

    Design Take-Home Challenge — Async 4-hour design challenge followed by a 30-minute live discussion of design decisions and reasoning
  5. 5
    Final Interview Round — 2 hours 45 minutes of live interviews including a deep dive into past design projects, design system discussion, and pair-programming session
